Our Country: India, Climate, Vegetation & Wildlife

Learning Objectives

Students will understand India’s geographical location, physical features, climate, natural vegetation, and wildlife. They will learn about India’s landforms, seasons, monsoon, forests, biodiversity, and the importance of conserving natural resources and wildlife.

Introduction to India

India is one of the largest countries in the world and is located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere. It is surrounded by the Himalayas in the north, the Arabian Sea in the west, the Bay of Bengal in the east, and the Indian Ocean in the south. The Tropic of Cancer passes almost through the middle of the country, and India follows Indian Standard Time (IST) based on the 82½° East longitude.

Physical Features of India

India has a great variety of landforms. The Northern Mountains include the Himalayan ranges, while the Northern Plains are fertile regions formed by rivers such as the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Indus. The Peninsular Plateau is rich in minerals, the Great Indian Desert lies in the west, and the Coastal Plains border the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. India also has two important island groups—Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal.

Climate of India

Climate refers to the long-term pattern of weather experienced in a region. India experiences four major seasons—winter, summer, the southwest monsoon, and the retreating monsoon. The Southwest Monsoon brings most of the annual rainfall and plays a vital role in agriculture, water resources, and the country’s economy.

Natural Vegetation and Wildlife

India has diverse forests due to variations in rainfall and temperature. The major forest types include Tropical Evergreen Forests, Tropical Deciduous Forests, Thorn Forests, Mountain Forests, and Mangrove Forests.

India is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Lion, One-Horned Rhinoceros, elephants, deer, and many bird species. National parks and wildlife sanctuaries help conserve these animals and protect their natural habitats.

Importance of Conserving Nature

Forests provide oxygen, prevent soil erosion, regulate climate, and support countless living organisms. Wildlife conservation projects such as Project Tiger and Project Elephant help protect endangered species. Conserving forests and wildlife is essential for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.

Practice Questions

  1. Which line passes through the middle of India?
