NOTES
The French Revolution
Introduction
The French Revolution began in 1789 and was one of the most significant events in world history. It ended the absolute monarchy in France and introduced the ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. The revolution not only transformed French society but also inspired democratic movements across the world.
French Society Before the Revolution
The Three Estates
Before the Revolution, French society was divided into three estates:
- First Estate: Clergy (Church officials)
- Second Estate: Nobility (Kings, Queens, and Noble families)
- Third Estate: Common people, including farmers, workers, artisans, merchants, and businessmen.
The First and Second Estates enjoyed special privileges and paid very few taxes, while the Third Estate, despite making up about 97% of the population, had to bear the burden of most taxes.
Causes of the French Revolution
Reasons Behind the Revolution
Several factors led to the outbreak of the Revolution:
- Heavy taxes imposed on the Third Estate.
- Social inequality among the three estates.
- France’s financial crisis due to expensive wars and lavish royal spending.
- Poor harvests, rising food prices, and widespread poverty.
- The ideas of philosophers like John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Montesquieu, who promoted liberty, equality, and democracy.
The Beginning of the Revolution
Storming of the Bastille
On 14 July 1789, thousands of people attacked the Bastille, a prison that symbolized the king’s absolute power. This event marked the beginning of the French Revolution and is celebrated every year as Bastille Day in France.
Soon after, the National Assembly abolished feudal privileges and worked towards creating a more equal society.
Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
Fundamental Rights
In 1789, the National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which stated that:
- All men are born free and equal.
- Every citizen has equal rights before the law.
- Freedom of speech and expression should be protected.
- Sovereignty belongs to the nation rather than the king.
This declaration became the foundation of modern human rights.
The Reign of Terror
Robespierre’s Rule
Between 1793 and 1794, Maximilien Robespierre led France during the Reign of Terror.
During this period:
- Thousands of people were arrested.
- Many were executed using the guillotine.
- Strict laws were introduced against anyone suspected of opposing the Revolution.
Although intended to protect the Revolution, this period became known for its violence and fear.
Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte
A New Leader
In 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte came to power in France. He introduced the Napoleonic Code, which guaranteed equality before the law, protected private property, and removed many feudal practices. However, he later crowned himself Emperor.
