NOTES
Mechanical Properties of Fluids
Introduction
Mechanical Properties of Fluids is the branch of physics that studies the behavior of liquids and gases when forces are applied to them. It explains concepts such as pressure, buoyancy, viscosity, surface tension, and fluid flow. These principles are widely used in engineering, medicine, hydraulics, aviation, and everyday life.
Fluids
What are Fluids?
A fluid is a substance that can flow and does not have a fixed shape. It takes the shape of its container.
Fluids are of two types:
- Liquids
- Gases
Unlike solids, fluids cannot resist shear stress.
Pressure
Definition
Pressure is the force acting per unit area perpendicular to a surface.
Formula:
Pressure (P) = Force (F) / Area (A)
SI Unit: Pascal (Pa)
Pressure increases with depth in a fluid.
Pascal’s Law
Statement
Pascal’s Law states that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions without any loss.
Applications:
- Hydraulic Lift
- Hydraulic Press
- Hydraulic Brakes
Hydrostatic Pressure
Pressure Due to a Liquid
The pressure at a depth h inside a liquid is given by:
P = ρgh
where:
- ρ = Density of the liquid
- g = Acceleration due to gravity
- h = Depth below the surface
Hydrostatic pressure depends on depth and density.
Buoyancy
Upthrust Force
Buoyancy is the upward force exerted by a fluid on an object immersed in it.
This force is called Buoyant Force or Upthrust.
It enables ships to float and balloons to rise.
Archimedes’ Principle
Statement
Archimedes’ Principle states that a body immersed in a fluid experiences an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by it.
Applications:
- Ships and Boats
- Submarines
- Hydrometers
Viscosity
Resistance to Flow
Viscosity is the property of a fluid that opposes its flow.
A highly viscous liquid flows slowly, while a low-viscosity liquid flows easily.
Examples:
- Honey → High viscosity
- Water → Low viscosity
Surface Tension
Definition
Surface Tension is the property of a liquid surface that causes it to behave like a stretched elastic membrane.
It arises due to cohesive forces between liquid molecules.
Applications:
- Formation of water droplets
- Capillary action
- Cleaning action of detergents
Bernoulli’s Principle
Statement
Bernoulli’s Principle states that for a flowing fluid, an increase in velocity results in a decrease in pressure.
Applications:
- Aeroplane Wings
- Atomizers
- Venturimeter
- Carburetors
Applications of Mechanical Properties of Fluids

- Hydraulic Machines
- Aviation

(Mechanical Properties of Fluids)
(Fluids)
(Liquids)
(Gases)
(Pressure)
P = F/A
(Hydrostatic Pressure)
P = ρgh
(Buoyancy)
(Viscosity)
(Surface Tension)
(Capillary Action)
